The original? I've been playing the remake, just lost Colonnel Gonzalez, shot in the face by a flying saucer, and barely managed to revive my support specialist from 2 elite bezerks ambush.

The original. The reimagining wouldn't run on my comp and the whole 4-6 soldiers thing is not enough for me. I always dreamed of a remake that would actually have a decent AI that would use actual tactics instead of walking around randomly and total squad kills would be more common.

How do missions in XCOM work? I heard about stuff like alien markers activating, etc. - sounds like something from solo boardgames.

Woo hoo! 4 missions and I already lost 30 soldiers :D ! And I just won a terror site with 1 soldier left :D !

I guess you already tried lowering all the video settings? I have everything at minimum on 1024x768, still looks good and works well enough except on FX heavy levels.

You get missions by scanning the globe, speeds up the game time until one of your satellites picks up an ufo or when abductions happen, and sometimes the council contacts you to rescue a VIP.

Compared to today's standards of remakes i find it pretty good, the game isn't a walk in the park and you still need to think on your tactics. They did dumb down some features though. You only get one base and the aliens don't attack it, and the inventory system is reduced to 4-5 items per soldier. Can't say how the AI is, i'm playing on normal and it seems ok, knows how to throw grenades effectively and flank me with hidden troops.

And did you really take 30 soldiers on a mission? I don't remember EU and TFTD, but on apocalypse i never brought more than 8 in one mission, divided in 2 groups to scout opposite sides.

You do only get one base but most people only used the multiple bases from the original to expand their coverage which can be done just with satellites in the new one. I admit I'd've liked to see the aliens make a run on my base at some point though. That would've been fun.

The AI is fine. The aliens behave like a somewhat savvy player would. On normal difficulty they don't scout the map on their own though. That's only on Classic or Impossible. The inclusion of an Ironman mode (one save that autosaves every turn) is welcome. The temptation to save scum is so very very high otherwise. The inclusion of a class system for your soldiers is also pretty neat and makes a great deal of sense. Every class can chuck grenades and use medkits but only heavys have access to higher ordinance and the support are much better with the healing. It adds a dimension of getting the right people where they need to be to do what they're best at. Assaults with shotguns right up close to the enemy, snipers perched on a building or hill in constant overwatch to cover your squad, etc.

It's still identifiably XCOM but it's one part update and one part reimagining.

My comp is 9 years old and I don't have the game.

I see.

To me there's only one standard. It's "X-Com1 is great but it kinda sucks in a lot of aspects (interface, AI, economy, politics, bugs, etc), I want something that keeps all the good stuff and improves these."

Then it would be pointless for me to buy it even if I had a new computer.

I meant 30 soldiers dead in sum of all missions:
1st mission - 3 soldiers/7 aliens dead. Victory. Sectoid medium scout.
2nd mission - 12 soldiers/8 aliens dead. Defeat (the last soldier escaped with) Sectoid medium scout.
3rd mission - 2 soldiers/9 aliens dead. Victory. Sectoid medium scout.
4th mission - 13 soldiers/16 aliens dead. Victory. Floater terror site.
5th mission - 4 soldiers/7 aliens dead. Victory. Floater large scout.
6th mission - 8 soldiers/6 aliens dead. Victory. Sectoid medium scout.
Oh, it's 42 now.

And now, the best part :D .
I just got an epic base defence battle :D . I had a base with a bottleneck of stores under the access lift and hangars. So, they had to get through a single corridor to get into the base.
I had 34 soldiers in mission. Weapons - mostly rifles, several laser pistols, two heavy cannons two rocket launchers and some grenades (I think I got hit by the 80 items bug.).
The enemy was sectoids and cyberdisks. They had blaster bombs and psi attacks.
I was first battling them in the access lift area - managed to disable the blaster bomb guy during that part of the battle. Then I was losing soldiers to mind control and the goddamned cyberdisks. After losing about 8 soldiers, I controlled the access lift and I was counter-attacking into the hangars. One cyberdisk was destroyed.
Then I encountered 3 sectoids and a cyberdisk. I didn't have smoke grenades and couldn't bring heavy weapons to bear on the cyberdisk.
I think I have lost 5 or 7 soldiers until the goddamned thing finally had decency to die. Meanwhile PSI was wreaking havoc on my rears and natural panic made bringing in reinforcements troublesome.
Finally, I managed to clear the first hangar with 3 remaining sane soldiers (2 others were mind-controlled/panicked). Then one of them got psi-panicked, and two others got killed by the remaining cyberdisk while trying to destroy it and get the psyker. The one that got panicked runned out straight into the hangar with the cyberdisk.
And so I have ultimately have lost 34 soldiers in a single mission. It was a nightmare. Game over man, game over.
The no-line-of sight PSI is really unfair XD .

It's on Steam. All of 'em are, in fact. You can get all but the new one in a single package for £9 and they'll run fine.

I'm using XCOMUTIL.
I'm playing with improved HWPs, optimized starting base layout and enabled difficulty modes other than the beginner (the original game has a bug that makes all difficulty level beginner).
I also made a mod that makes the economy make more sense - I set following values with an assumption that 1$ in game = 10 real $ - renting a skyranger costs 1 million $, renting an interceptor 3 million $, most of guns are much less expensive, though "rockets" (extreme accuracy suggests that that they are guided) are more expensive. It's much more difficult to make money by selling alien guns.
Also, I changed damage values basing on GURPS Ultratech. HE and I ammo for heavy cannon and auto-cannon is now much less powerful. Oh and I decreased accuracy of most of weapons.
